The construction of this architecturally designed, northeasterly facing eco-extension has been in the pipeline for one decade since the construction of the client’s first dwelling. The considered living area (62m2) comprises a sophisticated bathroom, compact laundry and large open plan media room intended as a home study. This room, boasting raked square set ceilings to a pitch of 3.5 metres, opens onto an expansive Merbau entertaining deck (57m2) adjoining the two dwellings as one. The brief for designer’s Tamborine Mountain Building Design was to ensure the new dwelling perfectly matched the existing steel frame infrastructure. Set amongst the picturesque Mount Tamborine countryside, the home has been designed for strict BAL 12.5 conditions including Low e glazing. Additional batt insulation to the ceiling cavity and a Permifloor system to increase the thermal floor rating was also installed to the raised subfloor to combat anticipated severe weather conditions.
The exposed steel roof system to the deck and soffits was carefully designed to match the existing house by long- term suppliers – Australian Framing Solutions – and therefore required larger than usual exposed steel beams and rafters. Outside the majority of exterior cladding is also comprised of steel products, including Custom Orb Zincalume sheeting, Stratco Maxirib plus Scyon Matrix square boards. Overlooking the picturesque mountains the striking bright orange colour palette was inspired by the surrounding landscape – in particular the orange nasturtium flower! Tastefully hidden from sight is a 45,000L underground concrete watertank which was cast onsite and links with a whole-of- house UV water filter. To the LHS of the property houses the functional utilities including a customised outdoor dog wash facility, with hidden notched pipework set inside a 190×190 Merbau post.
Many other unique areas of innovative carpentry have also been achieved including oversized stair landings to assist the client’s elderly dog and impressive handcrafted Acacia laminated timber cabinetry to both the wall hung vanity and laundry bench top. Superior workmanship is demonstrated throughout this entire eco-extension including the pristine (and rare) Queensland Spotted Gum Timber Flooring (by Queensland Timber Flooring) and complimentary 68x19mm Merbau skirting and architrave, plus Meranti solid core cavity slider doors (by Woodworkers) all stained in Natural Pine Sikkens paint products. Oversized Merbau windows and sliding stacker doors have been fitted with steel insect mesh (by Duce Window and Doors) and compliment the high quality of fixtures and fittings throughout. Careful installation of miscellaneous items also includes an oversized projector and screen, plus provisions for speaker and subwoofer systems and outdoor overhead heaters.
// Tamborine Mountain is located with the Scenic Rim region and considered part of the Gold Coast hinterland. It’s located near Beechmont, Canungra and Tamborine Village.
